SCREW HEAD TYPES:
WOOD SCREWS:
- A form of screw designed for use specifically with wood. The two materials are held together by the shape of the screw thread that the screw forms in the material as it is being inserted.
SELF-TAPPING SCREWS:
- These screws are used for forming their own threads in materials. They can be used to join metals and plastics and can also be used with various forms of captive nut, for example, in the assembly of car interiors.
TEMPORARY JOINING METHODS:
- Joining methods that do not damage the materials being joined when the joint is undone. The most common example of this is the nut and bolt arrangement. There is a large range of different types of standard components that carry out a similar function. These include wood screws and self-tapping screws, which cut their own threads as they are screwed into the material. If a metal, such as steel, is thick enough, a thread can be formed in an appropriately sized hole, removing the need for a nut.
